Dr Zakiyyah Limalia-Essop is a qualified ophthalmologist and a Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa since 2023.  She has a love for ophthalmology and a passion for caring for people.  She has over 8 years of experience in ophthalmology having worked at different ophthalmology eye units over the different provinces across the country.  She has a special interest in anterior segment surgery as well as retinal pathology.

Dr Limalia-Essop obtained her medical degree (MBChB) from the University of Pretoria in 2011 and received her Diploma in Ophthalmology in 2018. Dr Limalia-Essop completed her internship training at Pietermaritzburg Hospital Complex in 2013 and thereafter served her community service hours at Northdale hospital in Pietermaritzburg  in 2014. She was then appointed supernumerary registrar in Ophthalmology at Steve Biko Academic hospital  from 2016 to 2017.  She then moved to Pietermaritzburg from 2017 to 2019 as a medical officer in Ophthalmology rotating between Northdale, Greys and Edendale hospitals.  She also participated in cataract outreach while there.  Dr Limalia-Essop then went on to do her Registrar specialisation in Ophthalmology at the prestigious University of Cape Town from 2020 to 2023.  She obtained her Fellowship of college of ophthalmology in 2022 and her MMED form University of Cape town in 2023. Dr Limalia-Essop has experience in diagnosis and management  of all aspects of general ophthalmology such as anterior segment cataracts corneal pathologies conjunctival pathologies, diabetic retinopathy, Age related macular degeneration and various retinal pathology problems, glaucoma, oculoplastics, squints.  She performs Cataract surgery, pterygium, corneal graft, corneal cross linking,  glaucoma surgery among various others.

During her free time she likes spending time with her family and her 2 children.

Dr Limalia-Essop is registered as an ophthalmologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
